URBAN GLAMOUR

Set the night alight with metallic shades and modern styling for a glamorous city wedding with timeless appeal. Let the good times begin!

Metallic shades are eternally appealing. Their rich sheen adds instant glamour and sophistication to a look and they’re ideal for both classic and contemporary celebrations. Best of all, they suit all seasons, says wedding coordinator Karla Oettler of Absolute Collection. “The warm, glowing characteristics of metallic shades such as bronze and gold make them ideal for autumn or winter weddings, while the lighter, brighter coolness of silver and chrome suits spring and summer occasions,” she explains. Experiment with different shades in both glossy and matt finishes until you come up with a look (low key or over the top) that speaks to you.

Chandelier lighting matches the opulent nature of metallic colours while “make- your-own” cocktail favours set a festive party tone.

Wedding cakes are no longer just a traditional treat. These days they’re an important aspect of the wedding decor and a creative way of reinforcing one’s theme – as done here with the metallic coloured ribbons and silver beads. Mini indulgences are also in vogue – think petit fours, biscotti, macaroons, small toffee apples, designer cupcakes and cake pops, all covered in gold and silver dust or decorated to complement the decor.

Having a cocktail reception means that you’re not restricted to a three-course, sit-down dinner. Mix canapés with a plated main meal and bite-sized desserts to allow your guests to mingle.

You could also showcase local flavours with tempting morsels inherent to the region. The menu at this slick city bash includes sushi on arrival and salt and pepper calamari with skinny fries and lemony aioli, served in large bamboo cones. For the main, guests enjoy spicy Asian-marinated linefish served on wasabi mash with wok-fried greens, while dessert features a decadent hazelnut biscuit round topped with chocolate mousse, smothered in dark chocolate ganache and garnished with caramel popcorn.

The true “wow” factor lies in the little details, such as swizzle sticks in the shape of Table Mountain (the backdrop for the day), silver and pewter-covered edibles, and bold, funky stationery that includes everything from the wedding invite and menu to origami and even VIP admission arm bands! Antique gold cutlery contrasts with contemporary black crockery, while richly textured tablecloths and crystal chandeliers look surprisingly at home alongside sleek black and chrome bar chairs.
